About Us
80 Years of Stringent Protocols and a Focused Breeding Program
A Long-Standing Legacy
For five generations, the Flying W Ranch family has been raising Angus cattle with one mission in mind: To produce superior Angus genetics that thrive in a harsh environment with minimal input. Behind every cow, there is almost 80 years of diligent breeding that has made our herd what it is today. We continue to breed for sound, functional cattle that strive in our environment. Today we have a maternal herd that has withstood the test of time.
Strict Culling
Time is an overlooked, yet valuable asset. We expect a cow to do everything on their own—if she needs help with nursing, hooves trimmed, etc. she is culled. Our cows must be easy fleshing, breed back every year, have good feet and udder, calve unassisted and do all this while on just grass while raising a phenomenal calf every year. Almost 80 years of continuous stringent genetic selection have made our herd what it is today!
Calving
As we have for generations, we continue to expect our cows to calve unassisted. We start calving at the end of March in a large pasture. When the calves are born, they must stand and begin nursing within ten minutes. It is rare we ever pull a calf or have to help it nurse. Generations of a maternal focus has led us to where we are today.
Weaning and Development
Years of raising calves without creep feed have helped us to find the “easy keeping” genetics. We expect our cows to wean a calf, breed back, and flesh easy on grass alone. After weaning, we develop the bulls and heifers slowly in large lots to ensure longevity and soundness. These bulls are hardy, athletic, and ready to go to work. We firmly believe that performance should be bred in, not fed on.
